Treatment Options for Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are swollen, superficial veins that usually appear in the legs. They often result from increased pressure in the leg veins, which is usually due to frequent sitting with your legs crossed, being overweight, or standing or sitting for extended periods of time.

If you have unsightly or painful varicose veins, it is in your best interest to see a skilled and experienced vein doctor who knows how to get rid of them for good. Let’s talk about some of your treatment options, and where you can go to have your varicose veins eliminated by a doctor.

How Can Varicose Veins Be Fixed?

The latest medical techniques in treating varicose veins are minimally invasive, which means reduced pain and fewer complications. Three of the most popular outpatient treatment options for removing varicose veins are the following:

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy involves the doctor injecting a saline (salt) solution directly into the problematic vein. This causes the vein to close, collapse, and be absorbed naturally by the body. This forces the blood to be rerouted to healthier veins nearby.

The treated vein will gradually fade within a few weeks. Sclerotherapy tends to be more effective for smaller varicose veins.

Laser Vein Treatment

This type of treatment for removing varicose veins involves targeting laser energy onto the problematic vein. The laser energy is absorbed by the blood in the vein, and this action makes the vein slowly disappear. The skin is unharmed during the process, since the device also cools the skin’s surface in order to avoid bruising and blistering afterward.

Endovenous Ablation

Endovenous ablation involves the use of a catheter and a laser, and both are inserted through a small incision. Ultrasound imaging helps guide the doctor to the varicose vein.

The catheter is then placed inside the varicose vein, and a heat- or radiofrequency-emitting laser is used to destroy the vein – causing it to close off. The blood will be naturally rerouted to nearby healthy veins.
