Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI)
Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) is a common condition in which the veins in the legs have difficulty returning blood to the heart. Over time, this leads to pooling of blood and increased pressure in the veins.
What Is CVI?
Healthy veins contain valves that help move blood upward toward the heart. In CVI, these valves weaken or fail, allowing blood to flow backward and collect in the legs.
Symptoms of CVI
- Leg heaviness or fatigue
- Swelling, especially at the end of the day
- Aching or throbbing pain
- Skin discoloration or darkening
- Varicose or spider veins
- In advanced cases, skin breakdown or ulcers
Why It Matters
CVI is progressive. Without treatment, symptoms often worsen over time and can lead to complications such as venous ulcers.
