Venous Ulcers
Venous ulcers are open wounds that develop due to long-term poor circulation in the legs. They are most commonly associated with chronic venous insufficiency.
What Are Venous Ulcers?
Venous ulcers occur when increased pressure in the veins damages the skin and underlying tissue, leading to breakdown and slow-healing wounds.
They are typically found near the ankles.
Symptoms
- Open sores on the lower leg or ankle
- Swelling in the surrounding area
- Skin discoloration or thickening
- Pain or discomfort
Why They Occur
Venous ulcers are often the result of untreated or advanced venous insufficiency, where blood pooling creates ongoing pressure and inflammation.
Our Approach
Successful treatment requires addressing both the wound and the underlying circulation issue.
Evaluation Includes:
- Vascular ultrasound
- Assessment of venous function
Treatment Focus:
- Improving blood flow
- Supporting wound healing
- Preventing recurrence
Physician-Led Care
You will see the doctor at every appointment. All care is directed by Dr. Scott Darling, board certified in vascular/venous and lymphatic medicine and vascular ultrasound.
Do Not Ignore Non-Healing Wounds
If you have a wound on your leg that is not healing, it may be related to circulation.
