Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a serious condition that occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein, most commonly in the legs. It requires prompt medical attention due to the risk of complications.

What Is DVT?

DVT develops when blood flow slows or becomes abnormal, leading to clot formation in a deep vein. These clots can partially or completely block circulation.

The most serious risk is that part of the clot can break off and travel to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism, which can be life-threatening.

Symptoms of DVT

  • Swelling in one leg
  • Pain or tenderness, often in the calf
  • Warmth in the affected area
  • Red or discolored skin

Some patients may have minimal or no symptoms, making evaluation important when risk factors are present.

Risk Factors

  • Prolonged sitting or immobility (travel, surgery)
  • Injury or trauma
  • Hormonal therapy or birth control
  • Pregnancy
  • Family or personal history of blood clots

Why Evaluation Matters

DVT is not something to ignore. Early diagnosis allows for appropriate treatment and reduces the risk of complications.

At Missouri Vein Specialists, we use advanced vascular ultrasound to evaluate blood flow and detect clots quickly and accurately.

Our Approach

You will see the doctor at every appointment. All evaluation is performed by Dr. Scott Darling, board certified in vascular/venous and lymphatic medicine and vascular ultrasound.

We work to:

  • Confirm or rule out DVT
  • Identify underlying causes
  • Guide appropriate next steps in care

When to Seek Care

Seek evaluation immediately if you experience:

  • Sudden leg swelling
  • Unexplained leg pain
  • Signs of a possible clot

Get Evaluated Quickly

If you are concerned about a possible DVT, do not wait.
