Peripheral Edema
Peripheral edema refers to swelling in the lower legs, ankles, or feet caused by fluid buildup in the tissues. While it is common, it is not always normal—and in many cases, it may be a sign of an underlying circulatory condition.
At Missouri Vein Specialists, we specialize in identifying the vascular causes of leg swelling and providing targeted, effective treatment.
What Is Peripheral Edema?
Peripheral edema occurs when fluid accumulates in the tissues of the lower extremities. This can happen when the body is unable to properly move fluid through the circulatory or lymphatic systems.
Swelling may develop gradually or appear suddenly and can affect one or both legs.
Common Symptoms
- Swelling in the feet, ankles, or lower legs
- A feeling of heaviness or tightness
- Skin that appears stretched or shiny
- Indentations in the skin after pressing (pitting edema)
- Discomfort or aching
Common Causes of Peripheral Edema
Peripheral edema can have multiple causes, including:
Venous Insufficiency
One of the most common causes of chronic leg swelling. When veins are not functioning properly, blood pools in the legs, leading to increased pressure and fluid leakage into surrounding tissues.
Lymphedema
A condition involving impaired lymphatic drainage, leading to persistent swelling that may worsen over time.
Prolonged Sitting or Standing
Long periods of immobility can cause fluid to accumulate in the lower legs.
Medications
Certain medications may contribute to fluid retention.
Systemic Conditions
Heart, kidney, or liver conditions can also lead to swelling and should be considered in evaluation.
Why Evaluation Is Important
While swelling may seem minor, it can be a sign of an underlying issue that requires medical attention.
Without proper evaluation, peripheral edema can:
- Worsen over time
- Lead to skin changes or breakdown
- Increase the risk of complications
At Missouri Vein Specialists, we focus on identifying whether swelling is related to a vascular or lymphatic cause and guiding appropriate care.
Our Approach
Comprehensive Evaluation
We assess your symptoms, medical history, and risk factors to determine the underlying cause of swelling.
Vascular Ultrasound
Non-invasive imaging allows us to evaluate blood flow and identify venous insufficiency, obstruction, or other abnormalities.
Physician-Led Care
You will see the doctor at every appointment. All care is provided by Dr. Scott Darling, board certified in vascular/venous and lymphatic medicine and vascular ultrasound.
Treatment Options
Treatment depends on the cause of the edema and may include:
- Minimally invasive procedures to treat venous insufficiency
- Compression therapy
- Management of underlying vascular conditions
- Coordination of care when other systems are involved
Our goal is to reduce swelling, improve circulation, and prevent progression.
When to Seek Evaluation
You should consider evaluation if you experience:
- Persistent or worsening leg swelling
- Swelling that is greater in one leg than the other
- Associated heaviness, pain, or skin changes
- Symptoms that do not improve with rest or elevation
