Superficial Thrombophlebitis
Superficial thrombophlebitis is a condition involving a blood clot and inflammation in a vein near the surface of the skin. While typically less dangerous than a deep vein clot, it still requires proper evaluation.
What Is Superficial Thrombophlebitis?
This condition occurs when a clot forms in a superficial vein, often associated with irritation or underlying vein disease.
Symptoms
- Tenderness along a vein
- Redness and warmth
- A firm, cord-like feeling under the skin
- Localized swelling
Why Evaluation Is Important
Although superficial, these clots can sometimes extend into deeper veins or be associated with underlying venous insufficiency.
Proper evaluation ensures:
- Accurate diagnosis
- Monitoring for progression
- Identification of contributing vein conditions
Our Approach
At Missouri Vein Specialists, we use vascular ultrasound to evaluate the affected area and surrounding veins.
You will see the doctor at every appointment. Care is provided by Dr. Scott Darling, board certified in vascular/venous and lymphatic medicine and vascular ultrasound.
Treatment Options
Treatment depends on severity and may include:
- Anti-inflammatory measures
- Compression therapy
- Monitoring or intervention if needed
When to Seek Care
If you notice redness, tenderness, or a firm vein, it is important to have it evaluated.
