Popliteal Artery Entrapment Syndrome (PAES)
Popliteal Artery Entrapment Syndrome (PAES) is a condition in which the artery behind the knee becomes compressed, limiting blood flow to the lower leg—especially during activity.
What Is PAES?
The popliteal artery runs behind the knee and supplies blood to the lower leg. In PAES, surrounding muscles or anatomical variations compress the artery, particularly during movement.
This condition is more commonly seen in young, active individuals and athletes.
Symptoms
- Cramping or aching in the calf during exercise
- Tightness or pressure with activity
- Symptoms that improve with rest
- Decreased endurance or performance
Why It Is Often Missed
PAES symptoms can closely resemble muscular conditions such as shin splints or compartment syndrome. As a result, it is frequently misdiagnosed or overlooked.
